Fan of Mercedes tuning? Maybe a fan of German tuning companies that stand out on their own and make some incredible machinery.
If that’s the case we have some bad news for you, reputable tuner Carlsson has just been purchased by a group of Chinese investors.
Zhongsheng Group Holdings Ltd have bought a 70% stake in German tuner Carlsson Autotechnik GmbH and it’s all fine. I may have built up a destruction scenario too quickly.
The fact of the matter is that the Chinese have no intention to mess about with Carlsson’s design ideology or future development plans.
All they want to do is to bring the tuning scene to China. It seems that with the recent sales boom in the People’s Republic market, a Mercedes, Audi or BMW just isn’t exclusive enough.
It does make sense and what they intend to do is build several Carlsson facilities in China and also set up an exclusive Carlsson-Mercedes dealership.
That’s all fairly basic stuff and should bear no effect on Carlsson design and operations in the EU. What it should affect is the finances and future of the company.
With so much more business to handle and products to sell the German tuner should make considerably more money, so they might expand the list of manufacturers they offer tweaks for.
Zhongsheng have already announced that they have interest in having Carlsson products for Lexus, Volvo, Porsche, Toyota and Nissan as well.
An expansion like that could probably bring in some extra success on the home markets as well.
